Kalpitiya peninsula started to develop as a tourist location only a few years ago. The beaches are isolated and known for stunning sunsets. There are a few hotels and most of the restaurants are attached to hotels. The major activities near the lagoon are kite surfing and wind surfing, as the wind is usually persistent during the season. Most of the kite surf centers are along the lagoon. The main town is roughly 5km away. Unfortunately, there is no proper road from the lagoon to the town – just a dirt path through the marshes, which gets flooded frequently, and becomes inaccessible by anything else but a 4WD. Tuk tuk drivers are more daring and might give you a ride for around 700 LKR. However, the town itself has little to nothing to offer itself.

The location in terms of a kitesurfing spot is average to good. The wind is mostly good to very good during the season. The lagoon itself however is a murky swamp full of creepers – not too pleasant for beginners. Mostly waist deep though. The ocean can serve as a nice wave spot.

About 15km south is Kappalady lagoon. A good alternative to Kalpitiya lagoon as there are less crowds. There is a small hut where you can relax. It is run by a friendly local who sells drinks and snacks, and can help launch & land your kite. Some accommodation (range of budgets) and food options nearby.

The best time to visit Kalpitiya for kiting is from April to October. For the other two main activities and best locations here the areas differ: Dolphin watching (and a developing sector for whale watching, with larger boats) is on the Western seas, not far from the power plant. It can be done from hotels on the north side and lagoon/east side, it just means longer travel. Season is December to mid April. Snorkeling/diving is best done on Kudawa (northern) side; here are good reefs and in season (same as for dolphin watching) clear water. The lagoon also has good reefs but less chance for clear water.

Kalpitiya is located to 165 km North from Colombo. You can get here by bus/car for about 3.5 hours drive. Public transport is available from Colombo to Puttalam. Get off in either Puttalam, or Palavi Junction and take one of the regular operating busses 80 LKR, 1,5h. Also you can hire a van with driver for 8000-13000 LKR from airport. Many hotels have airport shuttle service available.

Boat trip to see dolphins/Sperm whales, Dolphins could be seen from November to April, Sperm Whale watching season is from December to April (not recommended for people with seasickness)
